Leo, our foundation sire. Leo is the reason Stark Mountain Shepherds exists. His amazing character, gentleness, and strength are what we are preserving today. From German working lines, Leo was serious, intelligent, and thoughtful. One of the smartest dogs we have ever known, Leo learned quickly and easily. He was a gentle giant with our kids and a great guardian and companion in the woods. Our hunting bloodline comes from him and continues through his son. At about 90 pounds, 25" tall at the withers, straight-backed, and long, Leo epitimized what it means to be a working line GSD.
Rex, our current stud dog, has taken up the mantle of his father in carrying on our lineage here at Stark Mountain Shepherds. He is the son of Leo and Mini. The perfect combination of the two, Rex displays the best of his parents. He is gentle but alert, highly intelligent, and loyal. Physically, he is exactly what you're looking for in a healthy GSD. He is about 90 pounds, 25.5" tall at the withers, straight-backed with long hind leg angles. Rex is not just our current sire, but also my personal pet/hunting dog. He is at home both at my feet as I sit in my recliner and beside me as I look down range through my rifle scope, switching only his eyes back and forth between me and the game he knows we're after. Like his father, Rex has amazing perception. Knowing what is going on at all times, whether by experience or sensing our body language. He is a protector only when it's necessary and never when it's not. I would consider him the best dog I've owned. Rex has been hip-checked by our vet through PennHIP. He has a PennHIP score of .28, putting him in the category of least risk for hip dysplasia.
Mini, our foundation Dam, is of German and Czech working lines. Although small, she is the toughest dog in the woods, and lead hen around here. Mini was chosen for her form. You couldn't roll a marble off her back, and her hind legs are as straight as can be. In looking for a female to accompany Leo in starting our program, we chose her to lend even better hip and elbow angles to an already well-built working line breeding. Mini loves being around her family, and her tenacity makes her exceptional in the mountains. She doesn't have any quit in her. Mini harkens back to the original "design" of the GSD breed. The original German Shepherd was a dog named Horand von Grafrath, owned by Captain Max von Stephanitz, who created the breed. Mini is the spitting image of that dog. With her son Rex being our current Sire, Mini is enjoying retirement here with our family.
Timber is one of our current breeding females, of German working lines. Sweet and athletic. She is absolutely wonderful with our young children. Ever the mother, Timber watches over them as if they were her own pups. She constantly puts herself between them and anything she perceives as a threat or vulnerability for them. On occasion, that has been a strange dog who wants to play. Without attacking, which she knows would put the kids in more danger, she heads them off and raises her tail. Letting the other dog know, in the way they communicate, that she doesn't know them and they aren't welcome quite yet. Avoiding conflict every time. Her agility is something you don't always see in larger breeds. She moves like a border collie and can clear a six-foot fence if pressed to. All while weighing about 75 pounds. Timber has been hip-checked by our vet through PennHIP. She has a PennHIP score of .19, putting her in the category of least risk for hip dysplasia.
Rita, one of our breeding females, from Czech working lines, is the embodiment of power in a GSD. She is 85 pounds of solid muscle and speed. Her ancestry on her father's side comes from the Jinopo kennels in Czechoslovakia. This gives her an intensity the others don't have, but don't let that fool you; she is a sweetheart like all the others. Any of our dogs can be trusted with even the youngest of our children, who, at the time of this writing, is just a baby, and Rita is no exception. She is extremely intelligent and very compliant. With both a great send button and an equally great callback. A testament to her lineage. Rita is fiercely loyal, and nothing would make it through her on the way to one of our kids. This all makes her a true asset in our bloodline when coupled with Rex. She is a great mother and raises great pups. Rita has been hip-checked by our vet through PennHIP. She has a PennHIP score of .20, putting her in the category of least risk for hip dysplasia.
